What Aid and Attendance is
Aid and Attendance is an increase to a monthly VA pension for veterans and survivors who need more help. A related Housebound allowance is for people who are largely confined to their home.
Who may qualify
The VA lists several situations, and at least one must apply, along with receiving a VA pension. The VA makes the decision.
- Needing another person's help with daily activities like bathing, feeding and dressing
- Having to stay in bed, or spend much of the day in bed, because of illness
- Living in a nursing home because of a loss of mental or physical abilities
VA long-term care
Separately from the pension, VA health care can cover some long-term care services for eligible veterans. The VA lists settings such as nursing homes, assisted living, adult day health centers and the veteran's own home.
Support for family caregivers
The VA Caregiver Support Program offers training, support and, for some families, respite care so caregivers can take a break.
How to apply
Apply through the VA, and consider getting free help from an accredited representative. Keep records of medical needs and care costs, since the VA asks about them.
Frequently asked questions
No. Aid and Attendance is added to a monthly VA pension, so the veteran or survivor must qualify for the pension first.
Some surviving spouses who get a VA survivors pension can also get Aid and Attendance. The VA decides each case.
Accredited representatives, such as veterans service officers, can help with VA claims for free. The VA lists how to find one.
